Kitchen lighting is easy to treat as a finishing detail, but it should actually be part of the design from the beginning. Good lighting makes cooking easier, highlights the finishes you invested in, and changes how the entire room feels.

The biggest mistake? Expecting one type of light to do everything.

Recessed ceiling lights are great for general lighting, but they can create shadows exactly where you need light most, especially when you’re standing at a countertop.

A better kitchen uses layers of light. Combine general ceiling lighting with under-cabinet task lighting and pendants or decorative fixtures where appropriate. Each layer serves a different purpose and gives you more control over the room.

Where your lights go matters just as much as which fixtures you buy. Pendants should line up with the island, task lighting should illuminate work surfaces, and recessed lights should be positioned around the actual kitchen layout rather than simply spaced evenly across the ceiling.

These decisions are much easier and less expensive to make before drywall goes back up. Moving wiring or electrical boxes later can quickly turn a simple design change into additional labor and repairs.

Not every white light looks the same. Warmer lighting can make a kitchen feel comfortable and inviting, while cooler lighting may work better for certain task areas. What matters most is choosing lighting that works well together instead of mixing noticeably different tones throughout the room.

Dimmers and separate switches are also worth planning. You probably don’t need the same amount of light while making dinner that you want while relaxing around the island later that evening.
